Feeling Appreciated & Valued

Feeling valued is an important aspect of your emotional well-being and it starts with you.

It's a natural desire to want to be appreciated and recognized for our contributions and who we are as individuals.

When we don't feel valued our lives, our relationships, situations and become difficult. But it doesn't have to stay that way!

The following paragraph I borrowed from the insightful book The Road Less Traveled by M. Scott Peck, MD. This book has opened my mind to many insights about myself personally. I highly recommend it!

The feeling of being valuable - 'I am a valuable person' - is essential to mental health and is a cornerstone of self-discipline. When one considers oneself valuable, one will take care of oneself in all ways that are necessary. Self-discipline is self-caring. If we feel ourselves valuable, then we will feel our time to be valuable, and if we feel our time to be valuable, then we will want to use it well.

Here are a few suggestions to help you cultivate a sense of being valued:

1. Acknowledge your own worth: Start by recognizing your own value and the unique qualities you bring to the table. Understand that you have inherent worth as a person, irrespective of external validation.

2. Surround yourself with positive people: Spend time with people who appreciate and uplift you. Surrounding yourself with supportive friends, family, and colleagues can significantly contribute to feeling valued. Seek out relationships where there is mutual respect and recognition.

3. Communicate your needs: Clearly express your needs and expectations to others. Let them know how their actions or words can make you feel valued. Honest and open communication can go a long way in fostering a sense of appreciation.

4. Celebrate your achievements: Take time to acknowledge and celebrate your own accomplishments, both big and small. Pat yourself on the back for a job well done. Recognizing your own achievements can boost your self-esteem and reinforce your sense of value.

5. Focus on personal growth: Engage in activities that promote personal growth and development. Pursue your passions, learn new skills, and challenge yourself. By investing in your own growth, you'll naturally enhance your self-worth.

6. Practice gratitude: Cultivate a habit of gratitude by focusing on the positive aspects of your life. Take time each day to reflect on the things you're grateful for, including the qualities and strengths you possess. Gratitude can help shift your mindset towards recognizing your own value.

7. Be kind to yourself: Treat yourself with kindness, compassion, and self-care. Prioritize your well-being and engage in activities that bring you joy and fulfillment. When you prioritize self-care, you send a message to yourself and others that you value your own needs.

Remember, feeling valued begins with recognizing and appreciating your own worth. It's also important to surround yourself with people who appreciate you and to communicate your needs effectively. By practicing self-care, celebrating your achievements, and cultivating gratitude, you can enhance your sense of being valued.
